He worked with the Ministry of Oil for almost 14 years and ultimately gave his resignation to pursue his business aspirations in 1971. Nine years later, in 1979, he set the foundation of General Mediterranean Holding. Till then, he had established a chain of companies, ranging from manufacturing to real estate. But, the incorporation of GMH had taken him to new heights of success.

He also acted as Vice-Chair from 1996 to 2000 at Harvard University. In 2002, he founded Anglo Arab Organization, and since Auchi served the role of its president. It is a private non-profit organization, which aims to work for the amalgamation of the British Arabs into British society. In 1996, he was given the post of an Officer in the Order of Republic, by the president of Tunisia. In 2002, he was rewarded with the Grand Cordon of Order of Independence by the King of Jordan, Abdullah- II. Due to his work to promote inter-faith harmony, Prince Carlo gave him Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Francis-I in 2003. He got selected as an Honorary Member at the International College of Surgeons in Chicago, Illinois. In 2007, Auchi was also given the Presidential Prize by the University of Cairo, an appraisal of his work for the promotion of higher education in Arab countries. He was given the award of Freedom of City London on July 18, 2013.

Nadhmi's company, General Mediterranean Holding currently possesses offices and hotels all around the world. Auchi has investments in construction, finance, and pharmaceutical companies. He is also the owner of Team Lebanon of the A1 Grand Prix Race Series and has shares in Orascom Telecom of the Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris.

Currently, the net worth of Auchi is around £1.182 billion.

REASONS FOR SUCCESS

The main reasons for the success of the Iraqi billionaire, Nadhmi Shakir Auchi lie in his charity works. A successful businessman and a philanthropist, his achievements include his work for the promotion of dialogue and inter-faith harmony among the different religions of the world. He is famous for his charitable and humanitarian work to promote a link between the Arab world and the Western world.

He had given donations to the families affected by the earthquake in Pakistan and built schools in areas that were ruined by the earthquake. A donation of £35009 was collected for the Cancer Research Unit of the Kingston Hospital in London. In 2004, he along with Anglo-Arab Organization worked for the release of hostages in Baghdad. In 2007, he collaborated with American University in Cairo and was awarded the “Nadhmi Auchi Fellowship for Young Arab Leaders”, for the youth of Arab countries. He had made continuous efforts for the higher education of Arab Youth. These are the reasons, for which the American University of Cairo gave him the “Presidential Prize”.

LIMITATIONS

Although Auchi is well-known for his philanthropic activities and charity work, still there are some glitches in his professional career.

Starting his career with an Oil ministry and was eventually raised to the position of Director of Planning and Development. He was imprisoned under the regime of Saddam Hussain in the 1970s. He set the foundation of GMH in 1979 and the same year, along with his family he left Iraq. He got his British citizenship in 1989 and since then he lives in London. His company General Mediterranean Holding is accused of being a key source of weapons procurement during the Iran-Iraq war.

In 2003, he was convicted of fraud. The scandal revolves around a French Oil Company and Auchi’s involvement in the corruption of $504 million. Auchi was fined $2.8 million, as well as a jail sentence for fifteen months.

A Pentagon Report called Nadhmi “a Global Arms Dealer” and stated that he is behind the mask of a philanthropist and a self-made businessman and played the role of an international manipulator of Saadam Hussain.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS

The Anglo-Arab Organization was created with an aim to conserve the identity of Arab Muslims in England, but unfortunately, the organization does not secure much success. It failed to promote the unity of Arabs in British society. So, the first and foremost suggestion to Nadhmi Auchi is to increase the performance of the organization. Secondly, Auchi’s authoritative personality is another area where work needed to be done. Thirdly, he must value the freedom of media and the press. He was repeatedly seen threatening the reporters and press. The Rezko Affair is the practical manifestation of Auchi’s role in silencing the media.
