Biography

Nasser Al Khelaifi is a Qatari business tycoon who holds executive positions in various national and international organizations. He is the chairman of Qatar Sports Investments and the beIN Media Group, the President of the football club Paris Saint- Germain and Qatar Tennis Federation, and the Vice-President of the Asian Tennis Federation.

Born in 1973 in Qatar to a pearl fisher, he completed his bachelor’s degree in Economics from Qatar University and his master’s degree from the University of Piraeus in Maritime Studies. Apart from being successful in business, Nasser is also a professional tennis player and is quite prominent as an executive in the media industry. Moreover, he is considered an influential football personality in both Qatar and France. He is the first leader from Asia to hold a position at the UEFA Executive Committee. The European Club Association elected him in 2019 for this post.

Not surprisingly, Nasser Al-Khelaifi boasts of numerous awards and accolades, conferred upon him by a football-crazy French society. After all, he managed to sign Lionel Messi and Neymar for Paris Saint-Germain which plays for Ligue-1, the most elite division of French football. He was voted as the most favorite president in the Ligue-1 in a poll conducted in 2015 by France Football.

Qatar Sports Investments (QSi) is a “private shareholding organization” founded in 2004 and based in Qatar. The organization focuses on investing in the sports and leisure industry both nationally and internationally. It aims to get global recognition as the leading investment company in the sports, leisure, and entertainment industry. The organization’s portfolio is quite impressive and includes the Paris Saint-Germain, Burrda Sport, and NextStep Marketing. QSi also sponsors FC Barcelona, the high-profile Spanish club. The organization is a subsidiary of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) which has multiple billion-dollar investments in various countries such as Germany, Qatar, and France. QIA does not make its holdings public.

Paris Saint-Germain

The Paris Saint-Germain or PSG is France’s most successful football club playing for Ligue-1, the top-most division of France’s football. The club is based in Paris and has won approximately forty official honors such as a major European trophy. The Parc des Princes is their home ground.

In 2011, PSG was purchased by the Emir of Qatar 2011 through his investment company QIA. As a result, it is now the wealthiest French football club, one of the richest in the world, and the ninth most valuable football club globally. The club has a net worth of almost three billion dollars and annual revenue of approximately six hundred million euros. They rank seventh in the football clubs with the highest revenues. They have lately become a regular in the UEFA Champions League.

beIN Media Group 

beIN Media Group is an international sport and entertainment company based in Qatar. It was operated by Al Jazeera Media Network as Al Jazeera Sports but was rebranded as beIN Sports in 2012. The following year, the beIN Media Group was established. Currently, the network operates 60 channels across 5 continents and in 7 different languages. Initially focused on sports, the media group diversified into including entertainment in 2015. The media group is a strategic partner of various international networking companies i.e., BBC Studios, Discovery, CBS, and Warner Bros. Moreover, in 2016, the group announced that they had the complete acquisition of Miramax. However, in 2019, they sold 49% of Miramax’s shares. In the same year, they received exclusive rights for the FIFA Club World Cup broadcasting.

Reasons for success

It is a well-known fact that Nasser Al-Khelaifi is closely associated with and is considered a friend of the Qatari royal family. Sheikh Tamim, the emir of Qatar, had made Al-Khelaifi a minister in the Qatar government in 2013. Moreover, the emir had made him President and CEO of PSG upon its acquisition by QIA. Despite his terms with the royal family, Al-Khelaifi has credit regarding the success of his numerous ventures. After all, before PSG’s acquisition, it was struggling to keep afloat, Nasser succeeded in turning the club’s fortunes by presenting a 5-year plan and signing famous names such as Leonardo and Ibrahimovic. The following year, the club attained the first Ligue-1 title and qualified to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

His personality and strategic mindset have earned him the appreciation and respect of football fans. He was voted to be “the most favorite” Ligue-1 president in 2015 with 35% of votes cast in his favor.

His influence outside the world of sports and entertainment is quite noteworthy as well. During the coronavirus pandemic, he was commended by the World Health Organization’s Director-General for his offer to help battle the crises through PSG and its players.

Suggestions for improvement

Al-Khelaifi has found himself in hot waters regarding legal troubles. He had been investigated for corruption by the Swiss courts in 2017 for television rights allocation of the 2026 and 2030 World Cups. Additionally, he was investigated for bribery in 2019. This charge was later replaced by that of “criminal mismanagement” for which he was acquitted and all charges dropped.

It can also be suggested to Mr. Al-Khelaifi to maybe diversify into sports apart from football. For example, cricket is a sport that is enjoyed by a large segment of the global population with cricket-crazy nations such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, West Indies, and England. This venture into the cricketing world can prove immensely profitable to beIN Media Group and Burrda Sport. The NBA or the National Basketball Association is another market in North America. It is one of the four professional leagues thoroughly enjoyed in America and Canada and can be a potentially profitable and rewarding market.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also caused colossal damages to the earnings and revenues of the sports and entertainment industry. With vaccinations becoming readily available and as the world is gearing up to return to the “new normal,” we cannot wait to see how Nasser Al-Khelaifi will bounce back.
